Silhouette in Steel, 01

A sculpture by Ethan Koch

This one is special to me. It’s one of the few pieces I have made as strictly an art piece, and offers several innovations in my technique. The swan, captured in silhouette, is held onto its base by two rivets- copper rivets. But what is really wild is that the rivets don’t come through the back! I developed a technique of my own to fasten the copper into the back plate, which is only 3/16” thick! It also features a smooth forge weld holding the scrolls together that form the “wings”, and a certain shape cleverly conveys the concept of the cranium of the creature.
