Classical Doorknocker

A functional sculpture by Ethan Koch

Easily my favorite door knocker so far, with every detail considered and carefully executed. The ring itself is made from seven different pieces, including two wheat twists enshrouding the traditionally fastened thumb knob. The backplates are secured to each other with decorative rivets, which also hold the ring and it’s mount in place. The hardware are all shaped and textured machine-thread bolts, intended to fasten to the supplied threaded inserts, meaning the piece can be removed from the door as many times as desired for convenience in cleaning or care without wearing out the wood. The rosette which the ring strikes is secured by one of these bolts, and has a built-in indexing pin which ensures proper orientation at all times. Form and function blend together perfectly in this masterpiece of classical beauty and ingenuity.
